PM/2 was
organized in 1988 by Richard D. Kaplan, MD. Dr. Kaplan is a board-certified
psychiatrist in private practice in New York City and Englewood, NJ. He is a graduate of
Harvard University, where he majored in biochemical sciences; the Mt. Sinai School of
Medicine; and the residency training program of the Payne Whitney Clinic-New York
Hospital. After completing his residency in psychiatry, Dr. Kaplan spent three years
in a research position at Cornell, where he co-authored thirteen research papers in
biological psychiatry.
Throughout his education and professional training, Dr. Kaplan has been deeply involved
with computer systems, has mastered many computer languages, has served as computer
consultant to psychiatric research groups and given seminars on computers in psychiatry at
numerous national meetings. He is presently Assistant Clinical Professor of
Psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Director of Psychiatry at the
North Shore-LIJ Syosset and Plainview Hospitals.
Upon entering private practice, Dr. Kaplan was struck by the dearth of tools to help
fellow professionals cope with the increasingly data-driven demands of the professional
world. He used his own computer skills, honed in the research world, to build
systems that streamlined office management and eliminated duplicative work, both by
professionals and by their office staff. Sharing his initial, small-scale systems
with a few colleagues -- some of whom went on to become long-time users of PM/2 -- Dr.
Kaplan added features as needed to keep up with the ever-evolving demands of the
mental-health workplace.
From its modest beginnings, PM/2 has grown to a family of programs, for both Windows and
DOS environments. The original DOS Practice Manager program, written in CA-Clipper,
is still in use by many practices; it has a straightforward, drop-down menu interface and
is both stable and very fast under Windows. PM/2 for Windows is written in CA-Visual
Objects, and runs smoothly and reliably Windows XP and Vista. It features a
"one-button" import utility that will bring in all of a user's data from the DOS
product, so that nothing needs to be keyed in a second time.
Both the DOS and Windows versions of PM/2 will be supported for many years to come.
Updates have historically been offered at least once a year and often more frequently than
that; we keep up with all developments in the field and (for example) have just modified
both systems to include the new 2008 redesign of the CMMS-1500 insurance claim form.
Updates are always cumulative, so that whenever you buy one you receive all improvements
and fixes added since your original purchase.
